BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Today we continue a new series called Student-Athlete Spotlight, presented by Coca-Cola, that will highlight Samford's outstanding student-athletes. Today's episode features men's basketball senior,
Myron Gordon.
Gordon is a native of Bordentown, N.J., and he came to Samford from Harcum College. He talked about what attracted him to Samford.
"It was just the family atmosphere," Gordon said. "They made me feel welcome as soon as I set foot on campus on my visit. The people around here were just so nice and so welcoming to me, I didn't take any other visits, I had to come here."
Gordon made an immediate impact on the team as a junior in 2018-19. However, he sat out and took a redshirt year last season. He talked about what it was like having to miss an entire season.
"It was definitely rough, but I just tried to make the best of it," Gordon said. "I worked out every day, I made sure I was practicing with the team, the team always kept be around for practices and workouts and stuff, so that was how I was able to stay sharp. And then I always had a long-term goal for what I wanted to do when I was playing, so that was always on my mind."
Gordon is leading the team in scoring so far this season, averaging 17.1 points per game. He talked about how the season has gone so far.
"I'm very confident right now, within myself and the team," Gordon said. "I feel like we're going to be a very strong team. I know that, and I know once the pieces come together, we're going to be a very hard team to beat."
Prior to this season, Samford hired
Bucky McMillan as its head men's basketball coach. McMillan brought with him a much more up-tempo style of play. Gordon talked about what it has been like playing in the new system.
"It's great, they make everybody feel like it's a family," Gordon said. "They really care about the players and how we feel. I'm really having a great time playing, and I enjoy that I came back for my senior year to play for Bucky."
This year, the team's schedule has changed several times due to issues with the COVID-19 pandemic. Gordon talked about what it has been like dealing with that throughout this season.
"It's really hard, but we understand that everybody is going through this that's playing basketball right now," Gordon said. "We just take it day-by-day, we have fun, we try to get better during practice. We understand that anything can change."
Gordon talked a little about what he has seen from the team so far this season.
"We compete, we have a lot of people that just want to be able to compete and play hard," Gordon said. "We understand that Bucky is going to require us to play hard. We know that the end result of playing hard will eventually become winning. But, we're not a result-oriented team right now. We understand we have to get better every day and we understand that we have to want to get better every day."
The Bulldogs will host UNCG in a pair of games this week. The teams will play Thursday at 6 p.m., and Saturday at 2 p.m., both in the Pete Hanna Center.
