BIRMINGHAM, Ala.— The Samford men's tennis team dropped a hard-fought close contest to Troy, 4-3, Thursday afternoon at the Samford Tennis Center.
"Today was an extremely competitive match across the board," Samford head coach
Rahim Esmail said. "Both teams competed very well. We were without our number one player today, and the team responded really well I thought. Everyone had to step up and fill the shoes and we came up just short. I thought the team responded well to adversity, and we were in a position to win the match on certain courts where we came up just short. These are the type of matches we need to use in order to motivate ourselves to be better."
Samford took the early lead by winning the doubles point. At No. 1 doubles,
Victor Chaw and
Jim Hendrix defeated Pelayo Antuna and Carles Anton, 6-0. At the No.2 doubles spot,
Eladio Fabregas and
Tomas Santantonio earned a 6-2 win over Christopher Tasker and Nicolas Simkin.
In singles, Samford earned wins at No. 3 and No. 5, but Troy picked up wins at No. 1, No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 to take the win. At No. 3 singles, Hendrix defeated Amer Bedwan, 6-3, 6-1.
Mohammed Ali Bellalouna defeated Simkin, 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 5 singles spot.
With the loss, Samford falls to 0-4 on the season. Troy improves to 1-0 with the win.
Samford will host North Alabama Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Samford Tennis Center.
