No. 7 Florida’s Walk-Off Single Downs Samford Baseball, 10-9

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The seventh-ranked Florida baseball team used a walk-off RBI single from Jacob Young in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat Samford, 10-9, in a hard-fought, back-and-forth game Sunday afternoon at Florida Ballpark. The win gives the Gators the sweep of the three-game weekend series.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Samford jumped on top first when Sonny DiChiara hit a two-run home run in the top of the first inning for a 2-0 lead.
  • Florida came back with three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-2 lead. Jud Fabian did most of the damage in the inning with a two-run homer of his own.
  • The Gators added a run in the second inning and two more in the third for a 6-2 lead.
  • In the top of the fifth inning, Ayrton Schafer hit a solo home run to cut the Florida lead to 6-3.
  • Samford came back with five runs in the top of the sixth inning to take an 8-6 lead. Brook Carlson scored the first run on a passes ball. DiChiara then scored on a bases-loaded walk. Andrew Bennett then singled to drive in Tyler McManus and Ryan Crockett to give Samford the lead. Taylor Garris then singled to drive in Schafer for Samford's eighth run of the contest.
  • Florida plated three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to take a 9-8 lead. Fabian drove in two runs and Nathan Hickey drove in the third run of the inning to give the Gators the lead.
  • With two outs in the top of the ninth inning, DiChiara hit his second home run of the game to knot the score at 9-9.
  • With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Florida's Jacob Young singled to drive in Josh Rivera to give Florida the 10-9 win.
 
ON THE MOUND
  • Brandon Sproat (1-0) pitched 1.0 inning in relief, giving up one run on one hit to earn the win for the Gators.
  • Chase Isbell (0-1) tossed 1.1 inning in relief, giving up one unearned run in taking the loss for the Bulldogs.
 
NOTABLES 
  • Sonny DiChiara went 3-for-5 with two home runs and three RBI to lead Samford at the plate.
  • Andrew Bennett went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
  • Ayrton Schafer hit a home run and drove in two runs in a 1-for-3 performance at the plate.
  • For Florida, Jacob Young went 4-for-5 with a double and two RBI to lead the Gators.
  • Jud Fabian went 2-for-5 with a home run and four RBI for Florida.
