Samford To Open Conference Play Against Citadel and UNCG

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford men's tennis team will open up conference play this week with a match against the Citadel on Wednesday, Mar. 17 at 2 p.m. and another match on Saturday, Mar. 20 at 1 p.m. against UNC Greensboro at the Samford Tennis Center.
 
Samford has collected six wins and six losses so far this season. The Citadel will enter the weekend with an overall record of 4-9, while UNC Greensboro has yet to win a match this season with a current record of 0-6. The Spartans will face off against Gardner-Webb before competing against the Bulldogs.

 BULLDOGS TO WATCH:
  • Tomas Santantonio led the Bulldogs in singles play last week against USF with the lone win for Samford at the No. 5 spot. He defeated his opponent, Alvin Tudorica, in a three-set battle, 6-4, 4-6, 10-7. Santantonio holds the most wins for the Bulldogs this season with an overall record of 8-2.
  • Victor Chaw and Jim Hendrix continue to be a threat in doubles action with eight wins and no losses this season. The duo defeated ranked USF opponents, Jakub Wojcik and Rithvik Bollipalli, at the No. 1 spot with a final score of 7-6 (0-7).
OPPONENT QUICK LOOKS:
  • The Citadel has found three wins against Methodist University while collecting one additional win against USC Sumter. The fellow Bulldogs have already started conference play, suffering a 7-0 loss at the hands of the Chattanooga Mocs.
  • Zvonko Benecedic has led the Citadel since Mar. 12, 2020 with an individual record of 11-8. He is the only player to have a winning record for the Bulldogs, capturing his victories at courts three, four, and five.
  • UNC Greensboro has seen six-straight losses so far on its season. Three of those losses have come from conference schools, including Furman, ETSU, ad Wofford. Nico Grewe has been a standout player for UNCG at the No. 3 and 4 spots with an overall record of 8-2 on the year.
