SPARTANBURG, S.C. – After his record-setting performance Saturday against No. 19 VMI, Samford senior quarterback
Liam Welch was named the Southern Conference Offensive Player of the Week presented by GEICO Monday afternoon.
Welch set a Samford and Southern Conference record by passing for 570 yards in Saturday's contest. He passed for four touchdowns, throwing scoring strikes from 96, 8, 60 and 13 yards out. For the game, he completed 37-of-59 pass attempts, averaging 15.4 yards per completion. This marks the second time Welch has been named Player of the Week, also earning the honor on March 1.
For the season, Welch leads the SoCon and ranks third in the nation in total offense per game (413.8 ypg.). He also leads the league and ranks fifth in the nation in passing yards per game (373.2) and total passing yards (1,493).
Samford will play at The Citadel Saturday, March 27. The game is set for a 12 p.m. (CT) start from The Citadel's Johnson Hagood Stadium.
