BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Former All-American and Walter Payton Award-winning quarterback
Devlin Hodges returned to campus for last week's overtime thriller against No. 19 VMI.
Hodges returned to campus as a guest of the Samford Bulldog Club. He watched as the Bulldogs took on VMI with a group of friends from the balcony of the Sullivan-Cooney Family Field House.
Hodges quarterbacked the Bulldogs from 2015 to 2018. In his time at Samford, Hodges rewrote the Samford and Southern Conference passing record books. He also set the national FCS record for career passing yards with 14,584, breaking the old record of 14,496, set by Steve McNair at Alcorn State from 1991 to 1994.
Ironically, at Saturday's game, one of Hodges' single-game Samford and Southern Conference records was broken. Current quarterback
Liam Welch set a school and league record, passing for 570 yards, breaking Hodges' record of 562 set against Western Carolina in his senior season of 2018.
Hodges signed as an undrafted free agent with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2019. That season, he started six games at quarterback for the squad. Earlier this offseason, Hodges signed with the Los Angeles Rams.
