SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Following two impressive performances at the War Eagle Invite, track and field's
Maggie Johnston and
Justin Stuckey were named the women's and men's field athletes of the week, the league office announced Wednesday.
Johnston has been named the women's field outdoor athlete of the week for the third time this season, and the sixth time in her career. At the War Eagle Invite, she competed in three events for the Bulldogs finishing third overall in the women's discus throw with a personal best, and new program record throw of 53.35 meters (175' 00"). Johnston also competed in the women's shot put and hammer throw posting marks of 13.98 meters (45' 10.5") and 49.22 meters (161' 6") respectively. Johnston's mark currently ranks first in the Southern Conference and 18
th in the NCAA East Region qualifying list and 38
th on the NCAA Division I Outdoor qualifying list.
Stuckey continued his record breaking year at the War Eagle Invite finishing first for Samford in the men's high jump with a leap of 2.21 meters (7' 3"). The mark set a new personal best for Stuckey, and a new outdoor program record for Samford, with Stuckey topping
Keyth Fightmaster's previous record of 2.20 meters (7' 2.5"). Stuckey's PR leads the Southern Conference and ranks fifth in the NCAA East Region qualifying list and eighth on the NCAA Division I Outdoor qualifying list.
Samford will have the weekend off of competition before making the trip to conference rival Western Carolina for the 2021 Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, May 1-2.
