BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford baseball team dropped a 5-4 decision to the Mercer Bears in the final game of the teams' three-game series Saturday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After Mercer took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a home run by Angelo DiSpigna, Samford answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 2-1 lead. Ryan Crockett homered to left-center field to tie the score. Towns King later singled to drive in Tyler McManus to give Samford the lead.
- Mercer tied the game when DiSpigna hit his second homer of the game in the top of the fourth.
- Samford added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 4-2 lead. Kaden Dreier singled to drive in McManus for the first run of the inning. Taylor Garris later singled to drive in Crockett for a two-run Samford lead.
- Mercer knotted the score at 4-4 with two runs in the top of the fifth inning. DiSpigna drove in the first run of the inning with a single, and Garett Delano later scored on a wild pitch to tie the game.
- Mercer's R.J. Yeager doubled to drive in David Burke for the eventual game-winning run in the top of the sixth inning, giving Mercer a 5-4 lead.
ON THE MOUND
- Hamp Skinner (3-1) pitched 1.1 innings in relief, giving up three runs on four hits to take the loss on the mound for Samford.
- Luke Sutko (3-3) tossed 4.1 innings in relief, allowing no runs on two hits to earn the win for the Bears.
NOTABLES
- Dreier went 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead Samford at the plate.
- Crockett homered, driving in one run in a 1-for-4 performance.
- For Mercer, DiSpigna went 3-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI.
NEXT UP
- Samford will play a three-game Southern Conference series at Wofford, April 30 and May 1. The teams are set to play a single game Friday at 4 p.m. (CT), and a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. (CT).
