Chris Edmonds was named a first team All-American, while quarterback
Liam Welch and placekicker
Mitchell Fineran both earned second team honors by STATS Perform when the organization released its postseason FCS All-America teams Monday.
Edmonds led the Southern Conference and tied for second in the nation in total interceptions with four. He also led the league and ranked 13
th in the nation in interceptions per game, averaging 0.6 picks per contest. Edmonds ranked third on the team in total tackles with 40, including 24 solo stops. He also had 2.5 tackles for loss, and he had one pass break-up for the season. Edmonds tallied one forced fumble and one fumble recovery as well.
He was involved in forcing six turnovers in Samford's first four games of the seven-game spring season. Edmonds forced a fumble and recovered it at ETSU. He then had an interception against Western Carolina, two interceptions at Furman, and an interception and a forced fumble against Wofford.
Edmonds was named the SoCon Defensive Player of the Week twice (Mar. 8 and Mar. 15), and he was tabbed as the league's Defensive Player of the Month for March. He was named first team All-SoCon, and was a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award, which goes to the top defensive player in all of FCS football.
Welch led the Southern Conference and ranked fourth in the nation in passing yards per game, averaging 373.7 passing yards per contest. He also led the league and ranked fifth nationally in total passing yards at 2,242 yards in just six contests. Welch was the SoCon leader and ranked second in the nation in total offense per game (424.2 ypg.), and he led the league and ranked fourth nationally in total offense (2,545 yards).
Welch started six of Samford's seven games this season, and threw for at least 300 yards in five of those six contests. He set a Samford and Southern Conference record, throwing for 570 yards against 19
th-ranked VMI. Welch was named the SoCon Offensive Player of the Week twice (Mar. 1 and Mar. 22), and he earned SoCon Player of the Month honors for both February and March. He was named first team All-SoCon, and was a finalist for the Walter Payton Award, which goes to the top offensive player in all of FCS football.
Fineran led the SoCon and ranked fifth in the nation in scoring, averaging 11.0 points per game throughout the season. He also led the league and tied for second nationally in field goals per game with an average of 2.14 field goals per contest. He ranked 17
th nationally in field goal percentage, making 83.3 percent of his attempts.
For the season, Fineran made 15-of-18 field goal attempts. He had four games when he made three field goals each, accomplishing the feat against Furman, Wofford, VMI and Mercer. He was also good on 32 of his 33 extra point attempts. Fineran also handled kickoffs for Samford, averaging 59.6 yards on 55 kicks. He was named first team All-SoCon at the conclusion of the season, and he earned SoCon Special Teams Player of the Week once.
Samford finished the spring season with a record of 4-3, wrapping up the season with an impressive 44-20 win over No. 23 Mercer April 17.
