BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford football team concluded the second week of fall camp with a scrimmage Friday morning at Seibert Stadium.
The scrimmage was the lone full-pad scrimmage so far, but the team did go through a scrimmage in shells last Friday. Samford head coach
Chris Hatcher said he saw some improvement from last week's scrimmage to Friday's session.
"I think it was better than the first scrimmage that we had, on both sides of the ball," Hatcher said. "We've still got a lot of work to do. I thought we tackled well. We have to work on our pass protection; we missed some blitzes there. A lot of it was just trying to find the right combination at some positions. Some of the guys that are older guys, we limited their reps. I'll have to go back and watch the film and make some decisions on the depth chart moving forward."
A total of five quarterbacks saw time in the scrimmage. Returning starter
Liam Welch led three drives, highlighted by an eight-yard touchdown pass to
Montrell Washington.
Asher Morgan,
Ty Hatcher,
Michael Maginnis and
Cade Blackmon received most of the reps at signal-caller as the coaches continue to work to solidify the depth chart. Blackmon tossed four touchdown passes in the scrimmage. He threw a 75-yard touchdown to
Bradley Ellis, a 10-yarder to
Jason Houston, a 20-yard score to
Jai'Rus Creamer and a 10-yarder to
Wesley Carlock. Hatcher tossed a 15-yard scoring strike to
Jocquet Jiles.
"We've just been real inconsistent with the backup quarterbacks," Hatcher said. "We've got four guys that have really been working with the twos throughout the course of camp, trying to find a guy that will step up and take it. I need to go back and watch the film and see if what I saw was accurate, but we've got to figure out a way to narrow that down so that we can get that guy some more work in case it's needed."
The defense had several highlights in the scrimmage as well.
Mitchell Owen had a 65-yard pick six late in the scrimmage. The defense also produced nine sacks, with
Trimarcus Cheeks,
Jonathan Moore,
Nick Jackson,
Thomas Neville,
Tay Berry,
Josiah Cotton,
Daniel Bettis,
Armond Lloyd and
Kobe Stewart each producing a sack in the session.
"We gave up a couple of first downs, defensively early, but then we played really well on third downs," Hatcher said. "We've been making big plays all year (camp) and we had some good turnovers. I think we're much improved on that side of the ball. We know the scheme and we're playing fast over there, which is really good to see."
The Bulldogs will take the weekend off from practice. The team will begin installing the game plan for the season opener next week.
Samford opens the 2021 season by playing host to Tennessee Tech Thursday, Sept. 2, at 6 p.m. at Seibert Stadium. Season tickets are on sale now at the following link:
