BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Coming off a 1-0-1 weekend against SEC powers Alabama and Ole Miss, Samford Women's Soccer head coach
Todd Yelton recounts the Bulldogs' 1-0 victory over the Crimson Tide and a 1-1 double overtime draw with the Rebels on the Samford Sports Wrap-Up presented by Alabama Power. Click on the video link above to watch this week's episode.
"I'm really proud of the effort of our team last week on the road against Alabama and Ole Miss," Yelton said. "With such a young roster, it's exciting to watch the growth of our squad last week."
The successes of the week saw the Bulldogs climb into the United Soccer Coaches Top 10 for the Southeastern Region. Within the top ten, Samford was the only school listed that is not a member of the SEC or that competes at a Power Five institution.
After 55 minutes of a scoreless match in Tuscaloosa, super senior
Alyssa Frazier put a goal in the back of the net for Samford, marking her 12th career goal and second on the season, while juniors
Taylor Yount and
Jennifer Seward each pitched in with an assist. Seward made her way down the right flank and crossed the ball into the 18-yard box where Yount flicked it on with her head. It then found the feet of Frazier who struck the ball on the volley past Alabama's goalkeeper, Brooke Bollinger, for the game-winning finish.
In similar fashion at Ole Miss, the Bulldogs scored the equalizer 14 minutes later with sophomore defender
Ella Simpson heading the ball past Rebel goalkeeper, Ashley Orkus, off a Samford corner for her first goal of the season.
Alyssa Frazier served up the corner kick and earned the assist to preserve the 1-1 draw.
Morgan McAslan also had a tremendous week in goal, shutting out Alabama in the Bulldogs' win, saving seven shots to keep the Crimson Tide off the scoreboard. In the Ole Miss game, McAslan tallied two saves, allowing just the one goal to the Rebels. For the week, she finished with nine saves and a 0.45 goals against average.
This week, Samford will play host to in-state rival Jacksonville State Sunday at 1 p.m. The match will be Senior Day for the Bulldogs' five seniors.
