SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference has named Samford's
Montrell Washington its Special Teams Player of the Week when the league released its weekly football awards Monday afternoon.
The honor comes right after he earned national Special Teams Player of the Week honors from Stats Perform earlier in the day.
Washington turned in a career performance in last Thursday night's season-opening 52-14 win over Tennessee Tech. He got things started late in the first quarter when he returned a punt 62 yards for a touchdown, giving the Bulldogs a 14-0 lead. For the game, he averaged 23.0 yards on three punt returns.
The 62-yard touchdown return was part of a huge overall performance. His 245 all-purpose yards came on three punt returns for 69 yards, two kickoff returns for 22 yards, seven receptions for 128 yards and one carry for 26 yards.
Samford will next travel to UT Martin to take on the Skyhawks on Saturday, Sept. 11. The game is set for a 6 p.m. start from Martin, Tenn., and the contest will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
