BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Samford senior wide receiver and kick returner
Montrell Washington was named the Stats Perform FCS Special Teams Player of the Week Monday afternoon.
In last Thursday night's season-opening 52-14 win over Tennessee Tech, Washington turned in an impressive performance. Late in the first quarter, Washington returned a punt 62 yards for a touchdown, giving the Bulldogs a 14-0 lead. For the game, he averaged 23.0 yards on three punt returns.
The 62-yard touchdown return was part of a huge overall performance. His 245 all-purpose yards were one off the FCS week's high, coming on three punt returns for 69 yards, two kickoff returns for 22 yards, seven receptions for 128 yards and one carry for 26 yards.
Samford will next travel to UT Martin to take on the Skyhawks on Saturday, Sept. 11. The game is set for a 6 p.m. start from Martin, Tenn., and the contest will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
