Baseball Battles Vanderbilt Tough in Fall Scrimmage

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Samford Baseball team took part in a 10-inning scrimmage at Vanderbilt University on Sunday, Oct. 23.

The Commodores outscored the Bulldogs 10-7 on the day, with the scrimmage being broken down into a four-inning and a pair of three-inning contests. Vanderbilt outscored Samford 4-3 through the first four innings, neither team tallied a run over the next three, and the Commodores outscored Samford 6-4 over the final three frames.

Freshman Nicholas Noto led the Bulldogs with a pair of runs batted in on a double, to go along with a hit and a run scored. Jayden Davis also accounted for an RBI base hit and a run scored while Joseph Massa and Kaden Dreier each knocked an RBI single.

Garrett Howe and Matthew Strand both collected a hit and a run scored, while Garrett Staton slugged a double and Stephen Klein added a hit.

On the mound, Michael Ross, Jake Holifield, Jacob Cravey, Cole Fryman, Ben Petschke, and Alex Goff all tossed a scoreless inning for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in inning number one when Blake Bortak scored from third on a passed ball. Bortak led off the frame by working a walk, and after stealing second was brought over to third on an infield hit from Klein.

Samford added two more runs in the top of the third courtesy of an RBI infield single from Davis and an RBI single up the middle from Dreier to extend its lead to 3-0. Vanderbilt would respond with a pair of runs in both the third and fourth innings to take a 4-3 lead.

The Bulldogs exploded for four runs in the top of the eighth, beginning with Noto's RBI two-bagger down the left-field line. Strand led off the inning with an infield hit, followed by a pair of walks from Davis and Lucas Steele to load the bases. After Steele was brought home by a wild pitch, Massa delivered the final blow of the inning with an RBI single to right that scored Noto.

Vanderbilt added six runs to their total over the eighth and ninth innings, scoring four in the bottom of the eighth and two in the ninth.

The Bulldogs will officially put a bow on their fall 2022 slate with their final few days of practice this week.
