Soccer To Host SoCon Quarterfinals And Semifinals This Weekend

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
The Samford University soccer team will play host to The Citadel in the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference Tournament Friday at 3:30 p.m. at Shauna Yelton Field. The winner of Friday afternoon's game will then take on the ETSU-Mercer winner in the semifinal round Sunday at 1 p.m. at Shauna Yelton Field. Admission to all games is free.  

Samford and The Citadel have met 19 previous times, with Samford holding a 16-2-1 series lead. The teams played earlier this season, with The Citadel taking a 1-0 win on Sept. 23 at Shauna Yelton Field. The teams have met four times in the SoCon Tournament with Samford winning all four contests, taking wins in 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2019.
 
Samford and ETSU have met 12 previous times, with Samford leading the series 10-1-1. Earlier this season, the teams played to a 1-1 tie. Samford and Mercer have faced off 24 times, with the Bulldogs owning a 16-3-5 series lead. In this season's matchup, the teams played to a 2-2 draw.
 
Samford enters the SoCon Tournament with a record of 9-3-6 overall and 5-1-3 in SoCon play. The Bulldogs played at Wofford last Sunday, earning a 2-1 victory, giving the Bulldogs a share of a ninth-straight SoCon regular season title. For the season, Samford has been led by Whitaker Buchanan, who was named second team All-SoCon, with three goals and five assists for a team-high 11 points. Taylor Yount and Kylie Gazza, both named first team All-SoCon, have a team-high four goals each, to go along with two assists each for a total of 10 points apiece. The Samford defense has been stellar again this season. The Bulldogs have allowed more than one goal just once in the regular season in a 2-2 tie with Mercer. 

The Citadel currently has a record of 10-8-0 overall and 4-5-0 in SoCon action. In the opening round of the SoCon Tournament Tuesday evening, The Citadel earned a 3-0 win over VMI in Charleston, S.C. The Citadel has been led by Suzuka Yosue with nine goals and 11 assists for a total of 29 points. Jimena Risoto has four goals and six assists for 14 points.
 
ETSU has a mark of 5-6-5 overall and 3-3-3 in SoCon play. The Bucs have been led offensively by Emma Arnold with four goals and one assist for nine points. Mercer enters the tournament with a record of 9-3-6 overall and 4-1-4 in league action. Kendall Cook has led the Bears with six goals and seven assists for 19 total points.
