GAME NOTES--SAMFORD VS. UNCG (PDF)

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University soccer team will play host to the UNC Greensboro Spartans in the championship game of the Southern Conference Tournament Sunday at 1 p.m. at Shauna Yelton Field.
 
Samford and UNCG have met 17 previous times, with Samford owning an 11-5-1 series lead. Earlier this season, the teams met at UNCG, with Samford earning a 2-1 victory. Samford has won the last five-straight games against UNCG, with the last Spartan win coming in the semifinals of the 2017 SoCon Tournament, with UNCG winning, 2-1 in Birmingham. This marks the eighth time Samford has played in the SoCon title game, with the Bulldogs holding a 4-3 record in the previous seven contests.
 
The Bulldogs enter the SoCon Tournament championship game with a record of 11-3-6 overall and 5-1-3 in SoCon play. Samford defeated The Citadel (2-0) and Mercer (1-0) to reach the championship game of the tournament. For the season, Samford has been led by Whitaker Buchanan with five goals and five assists for a team-high 15 points. Layton Glisson has four goals and three assists for 11 points, while Ella Simpson has five goals and one assist, also for 11 points.  
 
The Samford defense has been stellar again this season. The Bulldogs have allowed more than one goal just once this season in a 2-2 tie with Mercer.  Goalkeeper Emma Donley has started the last 10 games in place of the injured Morgan McAslan, posting a record of 7-0-3 and a goals against average of 0.60. She has saved 24 shots, while allowing just six goals.
 
UNC Greensboro currently has a record of 10-7-3 overall and 4-3-2 in SoCon play. The Spartans defeated Western Carolina (2-1) and Chattanooga (2-1) to reach Sunday's championship games. UNC Greensboro has been led so far this season by Maddy Gilhool with nine goals and one assist for a total of 19 points. Gabi Santora has four goals and six assists for 14 points. As a team, UNCG has scored 32 goals so far this season, while allowing 25 goals.
