Baseball Travels To Alabama State Tuesday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.
 – The Samford University baseball team (3-0, 0-0 SoCon) will play its first road game of the 2022 season when the Bulldogs travel to Montgomery to take on the Alabama State Hornets (1-2, 0-0 SWAC) Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.
 
  • Samford and Alabama State will be meeting for the 15th time, with Samford holding a 10-4 series lead. The teams met twice last season, with Alabama State winning both contests. The Hornets took the first game at Joe Lee Griffin Field, 11-9. ASU then took the contest in Montgomery by a score of 11-3 over Samford. 
  • Tuesday night's game is the first of 12 games against in-state opponents on Samford's 2022 schedule. The Bulldogs will play two games each against ASU, Jacksonville State, Troy, Auburn, Alabama and UAB.
  • Samford enters Tuesday night's game at Alabama State with a record of 3-0 after sweeping three games from Arkansas State over the weekend. The Bulldogs took the games by scores of 9-8, 11-4 and 11-0.
  • Maurice Hampton Jr. had a team-high .600 batting average (6-of-10) over the weekend with a triple, a home run and four RBI.
  • Towns King had a huge weekend, hitting a home run in each game of the series. For the weekend, he hit .455 (5-of-11) with a double, three home runs and a team-high seven RBI. 
  • Alabama State comes into the game with a mark of 1-2. The Hornets fell to Southern, 7-6 in 10 innings, defeated Florida A&M, 9-6 and then dropped a 10-0 decision to New Orleans.
  • Chris Lewis led the Hornets with a .500 average (5-of-10). Angel Jimenez hit .429 (3-of-7) with a home run and four RBI in the Hornets' three games over the weekend.
  • Samford was picked to finish third by the media and sixth by the coaches in the Southern Conference's preseason polls.
  • Two Bulldogs received preseason honors from the Southern Conference coaches. Third baseman Will David was named first team preseason All-SoCon, while catcher Kaden Dreier earned second team All-SoCon honors.
  • Samford is scheduled to start freshman right-handed pitcher Will Lynch in his collegiate debut Tuesday night at Alabama State.
  • Alabama State has not named a starter for Tuesday's game yet.

  • Samford will play a three-game series at Florida State this weekend. The teams are set to play Friday at 5 p.m. (CT), Saturday at 1 p.m. (CT) and Sunday at 12 p.m. (CT) from Tallahassee, Fla.
