Late Run Lifts Missouri State Past Samford Baseball, 4-3

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Missouri State scored a run in the top of the ninth inning to take a 4-3 win over Samford in the first game of a three-game series Friday night at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
 
With the loss, Samford falls to 12-11 on the season. Missouri State improves to 13-9 with the win.
 
Samford was led in the game by Garrett Howe, going 2-for-2 with two RBI. Carson Hobbs (1-2) pitched 1.0 inning, giving up one run on one hit to take the loss for the Bulldogs. Jacob Cravey started the game on the mound, tossing 6.0 innings, allowing three runs on five hits, and recording eight strikeouts.
 
For Missouri State, Mason Greer went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Trey Ziegenbein (4-2) earned the win on the mound for the Bears, tossing 2.0 hitless innings of relief.
 
Samford jumped on top first with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Howe singled to lead off the inning and later scored from third base when Colton Ledbetter grounded into a double play for a 1-0 Samford lead.
 
The Bulldogs added two runs in the fifth inning to push its lead to 3-0. Howe singled to right field to drive in Kace Garner and Andrew Bennett for a three-run Samford lead.
 
Missouri State came back with two runs in the top of the sixth inning to cut the lead to 3-2. Greer singled up the middle to drive in Drake Baldwin and Walker Jenkins to pull to within one run.
 
The Bears tied the game with a run in the top of the seventh inning. Baldwin hit a sacrifice fly to left field to drive in Grant Wood to knot the score at 3-3.
 
In the top of the ninth inning, Baldwin again hit a sacrifice fly to left field to drive in Spencer Nivens for a 4-3 MSU lead. Samford was able to get two runners on base in the bottom of the ninth inning, but the Bulldogs were unable to drive a run across the plate and the Bears finished with the 4-3 win.
 
The teams will continue their series with a game Saturday afternoon. The game is set for a 2 p.m. start from Joe Lee Griffin Field.
