BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Despite an impressive pitching performance, the Samford baseball team fell, 1-0 in the final game of a three-game series with VMI Sunday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
With Samford's wins on Friday and Saturday, the Bulldogs take the series from the Keydets, two games to one. Samford falls to 15-14 overall and 2-1 in Southern Conference play. VMI improves to 10-23 overall and 1-2 in league action.
Jalon Long (2-3) started the game on the mound for the Bulldogs, pitching 7.0 innings, giving up just one run on three hits and striking out four batters in taking the loss for Samford.
Alex Goff tossed the final 2.0 innings without allowing a hit.
The Samford offense tallied four hits on the day but was unable to bring a run across the plate.

Andrew Bennett had one hit each for the Bulldogs.
For VMI, Tyler Kaltreider (1-4) pitched 3.2 innings, giving up no runs on three hits to earn the win for the Keydets. Will Lopez picked up his first save of the season, pitching the final 2.0 innings allowing no hits. Cole Jenkins went 1-for-3 with an RBI to lead VMI at the plate. Trey Morgan went 1-for-3 with a triple for the Keydets.
The lone run of the game was scored in the top of the second inning. Morgan led the inning off with a triple to center field. Jenkins then singled through the right side of the infield to drive in Morgan for a 1-0 VMI lead.
Samford will play at Auburn Tuesday evening, April 12. The game is set for a 6 p.m. start from Plainsman Park.
