Bulldogs Set To Play Series At The Citadel This Weekend

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.
 – The Samford University baseball team will play at The Citadel in a weekend SoCon series in Charleston, S.C. The teams are scheduled to play Friday at 5 p.m. (CT), Saturday at 1 p.m. (CT) and Sunday at 12 p.m. (CT). All three games can be seen live on ESPN+.
 
  • Samford enters the weekend with a mark of 23-23 overall and 9-6 in the Southern Conference. The Bulldogs won two-of-three games over ETSU over the weekend, and then earned an 8-6 win over defending national champion Mississippi State Tuesday night. 
  • The Citadel has a record of 22-25 overall and 2-13 in SoCon play. The Bulldogs were swept in a series at Wofford over the weekend and fell to Winthrop, 9-6 in 11 innings Tuesday.
  • Samford is scheduled to start right-handed pitcher Jacob Cravey (2-3, 4.50 ERA) Friday and right-hander Michael Ross (5-1, 3.79 ERA) Saturday. Samford has not named a Sunday starter yet.
  • The Citadel is set to start RHP Devin Beckley (4-3, 3.08 ERA) Friday, RHP Cameron Reeves (2-7, 4.97 ERA) Saturday and LHP Fisher Paulsen (4-3, 4.21 ERA) Sunday.
  • Samford and The Citadel have met 36 previous times, with Samford holding a 26-10 series lead. Last season, Samford swept the season series, winning by scores of 12-11, 14-1 and 8-4.
  • Entering this weekend, Samford is tied for first in the Southern Conference in fielding percentage at .972.
  • Stephen Klein currently leads Samford and ranks eighth in the SoCon in batting with a .352 average to go along with his seven doubles, five home runs and 30 RBI. Colton Ledbetter leads the team and is tied for sixth in the SoCon in homers with 12, and he leads the squad in RBI with 39.
  • Samford reliever Carson Hobbs is currently tied for the Southern Conference lead in saves with nine so far this season. He has pitched 25.2 innings this year, posting a 5.96 ERA and a record of 1-3. He has recorded 30 strikeouts, while allowing just 11 walks.
  • The Citadel is led at the plate by Ryan McCarthy, batting .322 with eight home runs and 36 RBI. Noah Mitchell leads the team in RBI with 37.
  • Samford players rank in the top five in the Southern Conference in several statistical categories entering this week.  Stephen Klein ranks third in the league in on-base percentage (.472) and first in hit-by-pitches (16). Maurice Hampton Jr. ranks fifth in the SoCon in stolen bases (13). Garrett Staton is tied for second in being hit by a pitch (14). Carson Hobbs is tied for first in the league in saves (9) and he ranks second in games finished (15). Jacob Cravey and Jalon Long are both tied for fifth in games started (12).

  • Samford will host Auburn on Tuesday, May 17, at the Hoover Metropolitan Stadium. The game is set for a 6 p.m. start.
