BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Samford quarterback
Liam Welch has received a mini-camp invitation from the New York Jets, the team announced Sunday.
Welch is the second player from the 2021 team to be connected with an NFL squad. Wide receiver and kick returner
Montrell Washington was drafted by the Denver Broncos in the fifth round of the NFL Draft Saturday afternoon.
This season, Welch ranked fifth in the nation in total offense per game, averaging 352.4 total yards per contest. He also ranked seventh nationally in passing yards per game, with an average of 306.0 yards per game through the air. Welch completed 315-of-477 passes for 3,366 yards and 22 touchdowns. He passed for at least 300 yards in six games this season, including a Samford and Southern Conference record 582 yards against ETSU.
For his career, Welch passed for 6,486 yards, the fifth-highest total in school history, and 43 touchdowns. He amassed 7,480 yards of total offense, ranking third in program history. He was a finalist for the Walter Payton Award in both the spring and fall seasons of 2021, and he was named the Small College Athlete of the Year by the Alabama Sports Writers Association in 2021.
