Samford To Host Defending National Champion Mississippi State Tuesday At Hoover Met

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.
 – The Samford University baseball team (22-23, 9-6 SoCon) will play host to defending national champion Mississippi State (25-23, 9-15 SEC) Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. at the Hoover Metropolitan Stadium. The game can be seen live on ESPN+.
 
  • Samford enters the week with a mark of 22-23 overall and 9-6 in the Southern Conference. The Bulldogs won two-of-three games over ETSU over the weekend. Samford won the first two games (6-2 and 7-1) and dropped game three (12-8). 
  • Mississippi State has a record of 25-23 overall and 9-15 in SEC play. MSU was swept in a three-game series with Florida over the weekend, dropping the games by scores of 8-6, 9-3 and 6-2.
  • Samford is scheduled to start right-handed pitcher Will Lynch (0-4, 11.03 ERA) Tuesday night.
  • Mississippi State has listed right-hander Mikey Tepper (1-1, 8.35 ERA) as its starting pitcher for the contest.
  • Samford and Mississippi State have met 48 previous times in baseball, with MSU holding a 38-10 series lead. The teams met twice last season, once in the regular season and once in the NCAA Starkville Regional, with MSU winning both contests.  
  • Entering this week, Samford leads the Southern Conference in fielding percentage at .972.
  • Stephen Klein currently leads Samford and ranks fifth in the SoCon in batting with a .360 average to go along with his seven doubles, five home runs and 30 RBI. Colton Ledbetter leads the team and ranks fourth in the SoCon in homers with 12, and he leads the squad in RBI with 39.
  • MSU is led at the plate by Logan Tanner with a .318 average. R.J. Yeager leads the team in home runs with 16 and he shares the team RBI lead with Hunter Hines at 48.
  • Samford players rank in the top five in the Southern Conference in several statistical categories entering this week.  Stephen Klein ranks third in the league in on-base percentage (.478), first in hit-by-pitches (16) and fifth in batting average (.360). Maurice Hampton Jr. ranks fifth in the SoCon in stolen bases (13). Garrett Staton is second in being hit by a pitch (14). Carson Hobbs ranks second in the league in saves (8) and in games finished (14). Jacob Cravey and Jalon Long are both tied for fifth in games started (12).

  • Samford will travel to Charleston, S.C., for a three-game Southern Conference series at The Citadel Bulldogs this weekend. The teams are scheduled to play Friday at 5 p.m. (CT), Saturday at 1 p.m. (CT) and Sunday at 12 p.m. (CT).
