Goody Promoted To Associate Head Coach For Samford Soccer

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Carl Goody has been promoted to associate head coach for the Samford soccer team, head coach Todd Yelton announced Wednesday.

"Carl, in his time here, has already made a significant impact on our program," Yelton said. "One of the things for me is the character piece and having good people around your program, and he certainly checks all the boxes on that. He has a vast amount of experience from his time in the SEC and then obviously he understands our program from being here last year. So, it was just kind of a natural thing for me to do to promote him to associate head coach. I just feel incredibly fortunate that I have the opportunity to work with him on my staff."

Goody came to Samford for the 2021 season as an assistant coach. The Bulldogs captured an eighth-straight Southern Conference regular-season crown with a  perfect 9-0 record in league play and then won the SoCon Tournament, earning the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.  The Bulldogs then picked up the program's first outright win in an NCAA Tournament game, earning a 2-0 win at Auburn in the first round.

"I am extremely humbled and grateful to Coach Yelton and our administration for entrusting me in this position," Goody said. "It has been a privilege working with him and the people here at Samford University, and I am excited to continue serving our student-athletes in their growth and development in life, the classroom and on the soccer field."

During his first season at Samford, he worked with Morgan McAslan as she had another stellar season. She was named a two-time SoCon Defensive Player of the Month and earned second team All-SoCon honors. She was also named to the All-SoCon Tournament squad after helping lead the Bulldogs to the tournament championship.

Prior to Samford, Goody was a member of the UTSA staff for the 2020 season where he served as the goalkeepers coach.

Before his time with the Roadrunners, Goody spent the previous six years at LSU, five as an assistant and one as a volunteer. With the Tigers, his primary responsibility was working with the defensive unit. In 2018, the LSU staff was named the United Soccer Coaches Southeast Region Coaching Staff of the Year after claiming the SEC Tournament Championship title and qualifying for the NCAA Round of 32.

In his first year as an assistant coach, the Tigers made it to the SEC Tournament Semifinals as well as the NCAA Round of 64.

Over the course of his time in Louisiana, Goody's players attained a multitude of awards, including, All-SEC First and Second Team, All-SEC Freshman Team, Southeast All-Region First Team, Third Team All-American, SEC Tournament MVP, Second Team Academic All-American and SEC All-Tournament Team.

Prior to LSU, Goody worked as a graduate assistant with the men's and women's soccer programs at William Carey University in Hattiesburg, Mississippi from 2012-13. In 2013, the women's team reached the Sweet Sixteen of the NAIA National Tournament after an undefeated Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) season.

Goody earned a bachelor's degree in health and physical education, while also obtaining a master's degree in counseling psychology from William Carey.
