BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University soccer team played the Mercer Bears to a 2-2 tie Sunday afternoon at Shauna Yelton Field.
With the result, Samford's record moves to 4-3-4 overall and 0-1-1 in Southern Conference play. Mercer moves to 5-4-3 overall and 0-1-1 in league play.
Kylie Gazza scored a goal and had an assist for Samford in the game.
Ella Simpson also tallied a goal for the Bulldogs. For Mercer, Nicole Icen and Ciara Whitely had a goal each, while Jada Moorman had an assist.
Emma Donley, in her first start in goal for the injured
Morgan McAslan, had two saves in the contest. Mercer goalkeeper Lindsay Bell saved nine shots in the game.
Mercer struck first when Whitely scored off an assist from Moorman in the 14
th minute for a 1-0 Bears' lead. In the 19
th minute, Simpson scored off an assist from Gazza to knot the score at 1-1.
Gazza gave Samford a 2-1 lead, scoring on a penalty kick in the 80
th minute. Mercer's Icen then scored, also on a penalty kick in the 89
th minute to tie the score again at 2-2.
As a team, Samford had 18 shots, to 13 for Mercer. Samford had eighth corner kicks, while Mercer had seven.
Samford will play at UNC Greensboro on Friday, Sept. 30. The match is set for a 6 p.m. (CT) start from Greensboro, N.C.
