GAME NOTES--SAMFORD AT UNCG (PDF)
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University soccer team will play at the UNCG Spartans Friday at 11 a.m. (CT) in Greensboro, N.C., and then will play at the VMI Keydets Sunday at 1 p.m. (CT) in Lexington, Va. The game at UNCG was moved from its original 6 p.m. start due to the threat of inclement weather in the Greensboro area.
Samford and UNCG have met 16 previous times, with Samford owning a 10-5-1 series lead. Last season, the teams played in Birmingham, with the Bulldogs earning a 3-0 victory over the Spartans. Samford has won the last four meetings in the series, all by shutout. The last UNCG win in the series came in the semifinals of the 2017 SoCon Tournament, with the Spartans taking a 2-1 win. Kyla Reynolds scored the Bulldogs' three goals.
Samford and VMI will be meeting for the 11
th time, with Samford holding a 10-0 series lead. The teams played last season in Birmingham, with Samford taking a 3-0 win.
Kylie Gazza,
Mary Raymond and Reynolds scored a goal each in last season's Samford victory.
The Bulldogs enter Friday's contest with a record of 4-3-4 overall and 0-1-1 in SoCon play. Samford played host to Mercer last Sunday, finishing with a 2-2 tie. For the season, Samford has been led by Gazza with three goals and one assist for a total of seven points.
Whitaker Buchanan and
Ella Simpson have two goals and one assist each for five points apiece.
UNCG enters Friday's contest with a mark of 5-4-1 overall and 1-0 in league play. The Spartans opened SoCon play with a 3-0 win over VMI last Friday and then stepped out of league action, earning a 2-0 win over East Carolina on Sunday. UNCG has been led by Maddy Gilhool, who has scored five goals and dished out one assist for a team-high 11 points.
VMI comes into the week with a record of 1-8-2 overall and 0-1 in league play. The Keydets opened SoCon play with a 3-0 loss to UNCG last Friday. The team then earned its first win of the season in a 2-1 win over South Carolina State Sunday. VMI will take on Chattanooga Friday before hosting Samford Sunday. For the season, VMI has been led by Sedona Dancu with five goals so far this year.
