GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Samford University soccer team continued its recent hot steak with a 3-0 win at UNC Greensboro Sunday afternoon at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.
The win marked Samford's 10
th shutout of the season, the highest total in the nation. Over Samford's last three games, the Bulldogs have outscored their opponents by a total score of 11-0. Samford's record is now 7-3-3 overall and 3-1-0 in Southern Conference play. UNCG fell to 4-7-2 overall and 1-2-1 in league play.
Mary Raymond got the scoring started in the 28th minute when she intercepted a UNCG pass and placed the ball in the center of the goal for a 1-0 Samford lead. In the 54
th minute,
Ella Simpson headed in a goal off a free kick from
Alyssa Conarton to make the score 2-0.
Brigid McElderry scored a goal in the 71
st minute for a 3-0 Samford lead.
Raymond led the team with three shots, while
Layla Brown had two shots. Samford goalkeeper
Zoe Clevely had two saves in posting the shutout. As a team, Samford outshot UNCG, 10-6. The Bulldogs had four corner kicks, to two for the Spartans.
Samford will next play at Furman on Thursday, Oct. 5. The game is set for a 6 p.m. (CT) start from Greenville, S.C.
