Soccer Advances To SoCon Tournament Final With 2-0 Win At ETSU

JOHNSTON CITY, Tenn. – The Samford University soccer team earned a 2-0 win over ETSU in the semifinals of the Southern Conference Tournament Sunday afternoon at Summers-Taylor Stadium.

With the win, Samford improved to 12-3-5 on the season, and the Bulldogs advance to next weekend's Southern Conference Tournament championship game at Western Carolina. This marks the fifth-straight season that Samford has reached the finals of the SoCon Tournament. ETSU ends its season with a mark of 11-3-5.

"I thought we played excellent," Samford head coach Todd Yelton said. "We passed it really well and against an inside team you have to because they're so good defensively. And to be honest with you, it's pretty amazing what my brothers (ETSU head coach Jay Yelton and assistant coach Matt Yelton) have done in a very short amount of time. It was super, super hard, but our kids found a way to get two past the Goalkeeper of the Year. It was a great effort with our group."

Mia Wehby got the scoring started with a goal in the 21st minute off an assist from Jennifer Seward for a 1-0 Samford lead. The Bulldogs added to their lead when Kyla Reynolds netted a goal off assists from Layla Brown and Brigid McElderry in the 59th minute to make the score 2-0.

For Samford in the game, Reynolds had a team-high five shots. Goalkeeper Zoe Clevely saved two shots to lead Samford to its 13th shutout of the season. For ETSU, Ava Matherne had two shots, and goalkeeper Ashton Blair saved four shots.

As a team, Samford took 15 shots, to six for ETSU. The Bulldogs had five corner kicks, to just one for the Bucs.

The SoCon Tournament championship game between Samford and Western Carolina is scheduled for a 1 p.m. (CT) start from Cullowhee, N.C., on Sunday, Nov. 5.
