Baseball Edged Late at Southeastern Louisiana

HAMMOND, La. – The Samford Baseball Team dropped game one of its three-game series at Southeastern Louisiana 6-5 on Friday evening.

With the loss, Samford falls to 2-3 while the Lions improve to 6-0.

Stephen Klein, John Anderson, and Maurice Hampton Jr. all posted a pair of hits, with Anderson knocking a two-run home run in the top of the fifth. Klein, Hampton Jr., and Lucas Steele all recorded an RBI while Garrett Staton added a run and a double.

Jacob Cravey (0-1) took the loss, despite matching a season-high with eight strikeouts over 5.1 innings of work. Brody Westbrooks struck out four batters while giving up just one hit over 2.2 innings of relief.

Samford struck first in the contest, plating a pair of runs in the top of the first. A leadoff hit batsman by Josh Rodriguez, followed by a single to left by Staton, set the stage for an RBI knock by Klein through the left side to bring in the game's first run. Lucas Steele drove in the second run with a sac fly to center.

The Lions fought back by tallying a run in the second via wild pitch and another in the bottom of the third on a one-out single from Jake Killingsworth to tie it at two.

Samford retook the lead 3-2 in the top of the fourth, when Hampton Jr. brought home Blake Bortak with an RBI double down the right-field line. The Bulldogs added two more runs in the top of the fifth courtesy of Anderson's second home run of the season to go up 5-2.

Southeastern Louisiana began chipping away at the Bulldogs' lead by tallying a run on a Shea Thomas solo shot in the bottom of the fifth.

The Lions took back control of the contest by scoring three runs, using an RBI walk from Tyler Finke, a Bulldog wild pitch, and a sac fly from Thomas to regain the lead. A one-out walk, followed by a single to left and a hit batsman loaded the bases to set the stage for the Lions sixth inning success.

The Bulldogs got their best chance to strike back in the top of the seventh, when a double by Staton with two outs put a pair of runners in scoring position. Samford's rally was cut short by a strikeout to end the frame, however.

The Bulldogs will be back in action for game two against the Lions on Saturday, with first pitch from Hammond, La. set for 2:00 p.m.
