BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University baseball program held its eighth-annual Media Home Run Derby Wednesday at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
Participating in this year's event were Lynden Blake from Fox 6, Johnny Congdon from ABC 33/40, Blake Gardner from Samford Broadcasting, Ryan Hennessy from NBC 13 and Dee Jackson from CBS 42.
Each contestant got to take five practice swings before the official competition began. In the first round, with each competitor taking 10 swings, Blake, Congdon and Hennessy all tied for the lead with five home runs each.
Those three competitors advanced to the final round, taking 10 more swings to determine the champion. Hennessy took home the championship with five homers, followed by Congdon with four and Blake with three.
Following the competition, a meal from Troup's Pizza was provided for all competitors.
The Samford baseball team is in the middle of its Southern Conference season and currently sits atop the league standings with a 7-2 record in conference games. This weekend, the Bulldogs will step out of conference play, hosting Toledo, Friday at 6 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
