BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford baseball team opened preseason practice for the 2024 season Friday evening at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
In addition to practicing, the team scrimmaged for six innings at the end of the practice session. Head Coach Tony David said he was encouraged by the work his team put in during the first workout.
"This was just an incredible first day for our guys," David said. "We got a lot of work in today. We had six really good innings on the scrimmage side of things. It's so hard to have a good day on both sides, but it's a day where we threw a lot of strikes, and we caught the ball. We had a lot of good at bats, we hit some balls 2-and-0 at the fence. It's just day one of 18 really good practice days before we jump in the saddle for real in a few weeks. I'm really happy with our first time out of the gate and looking forward to getting back out here this week."
Michael Ross started the scrimmage on the mound and went 4.0 strong innings after missing last season with an injury.
Noah Berry was the winning pitcher and
Dominic Ganley picked up the save.
Jackson Harris hit the first home run of the preseason during the scrimmage as well.
"Seeing Rossy back out there was great," David said. "The guy has worked harder than anyone I've ever seen to get back better than ever. The entire team was through the roof to see him back out there dealing again."
Samford returns six position starters and two starting pitchers from the 2023 squad that won the Southern Conference regular season and SoCon Tournament titles last year.
The Bulldogs will open the 2024 season by hosting Queens University on Friday, Feb. 16 at 4 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field. For ticket information, please go to
