Volleyball Falls At UNCG, 3-1

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Samford volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (28-30, 25-19, 18-25, 24-26) decision at UNC Greensboro Saturday evening at Fleming Gymnasium.
 
With the loss, Samford fell to 12-6 overall and 6-2 in Southern Conference play. UNCG improved its record to 7-13 overall and 2-6 in league play.
 
Gracie Lynn Butler led Samford with 20 kills and 12 digs in the loss. Kaleigh Meritt tallied 15 kills and nine digs. Kate Morgan led the team in digs with 14, while Lexi Thatcher had 49 assists.
 
For UNCG, Allie Sweet had 19 kills and 12 digs. Chloe Nussbaum tallied 22 digs for the Spartans.
 
In the first set, Samford grabbed a 7-3 lead. With Samford leading, 14-9, UNCG went on an 8-2 run to take a 17-16 lead. The Spartans built a three-point lead at 22-19, but Samford fought back to take a 24-23 lead. The teams went into extra points and with the score tied at 28-28, UNCG scored back-to-back points for a 30-28 lead.
 
Samford raced out to a 12-6 lead in the second set. UNCG fought back to cut the lead to two points at 19-17. With Samford leading, 20-18, the Bulldogs scored five of the next six points to take the set, 25-19.
 
In the third set, UNCG jumped out to a 13-8 lead. Samford fought back to cut the lead to three at 19-16. Samford, however, could get no closer in the set as UNCG took the third set, 25-18.
 
UNCG jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the fourth set. Samford fought back to tie the score at 7-7. With the score tied at 13-13, Samford went on a 5-0 run to take an 18-13 lead. The Spartans came back to cut the lead to one at 19-18. With Samford leading, 21-18, the Spartans came back to take a 24-23 lead and eventually take the set, 26-24 and the match, 3-1.
 
Samford will return home to play host to the Wofford Terriers on Friday, Oct. 25. The match is set for a 6:30 p.m. start from the Pete Hanna Center.
