BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford volleyball team will return home to host a pair of matches this weekend. Friday night, the Bulldogs will play host to Wofford at 6:30 p.m., and then they will host Chattanooga Saturday at 5 p.m., both in the Pete Hanna Center.
Saturday's match against Chattanooga is the annual Dig Orange match, which is an annual event that honors Caroline Neisler, a former student-athlete who passed away in 2013 just weeks after being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. The Bulldogs honor the life and legacy of Caroline through Dig Orange.
Samford enters the week with a record of 12-6 overall and 6-2 in Southern Conference play after winning at The Citadel, 3-0 and falling at UNC Greensboro, 3-1 last weekend. Wofford is currently 14-6 overall and 6-2 in league play after a 3-1 loss to Mercer last Saturday. Chattanooga has a record of 12-9 overall and 3-4 in SoCon play after a 3-0 win over Western Carolina last Friday.
For the season, Samford has been led offensively by
Kaleigh Meritt with 248 kills, and she ranks second in the Southern Conference in kills per set at 3.65.
Gracie Lynn Butler has 212 kills, while
Ally Cordes has 169 kills on the season. Earlier this week, Butler was named the SoCon Offensive Player of the Week.
Additionally,
Lexi Thatcher leads the team and the Southern Conference in assists per set, averaging 10.56 per set. Thatcher was named the SoCon's Setter of the Week earlier this week.
Kate Morgan leads the team in digs with 271 on the season. She ranks eighth in the SoCon in digs per set, averaging 3.87 digs per set.
Samford and Wofford have met 30 previous times, with Samford owning a 21-9 series lead. The teams played earlier this season, on Sept. 27 in Spartanburg, with Wofford taking a 3-0 win.
Samford and Chattanooga have played 56 previous times, with Chattanooga leading the series, 35-21. Earlier this season, the teams played on Sept. 29, with Samford earning a 3-2 win over the Mocs.
