GAME NOTES--SAMFORD VS. UNCG--SOCON TOURNAMENT (PDF)

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University soccer team will open play in the Southern Conference Tournament by hosting UNC Greensboro in the quarterfinals Friday at 4 p.m. at Shauna Yelton Field. 

Samford and UNC Greensboro have met 20 previous times, with Samford owning a 13-5-2 series lead. The teams met last Sunday, Oct. 27, with the Bulldogs earning a 2-1 win at Shauna Yelton Field. The last time the teams played in the SoCon Tournament was in the 2022 championship game, with Samford winning on penalty kicks.

Samford enters this game with a record of 9-6-3 overall and 6-1-2 in the SoCon. The Bulldogs last played last Sunday, Oct. 27, earning a 2-1 win over UNC Greensboro. Samford's last loss came in the Southern Conference opener at Western Carolina on Sept. 19.

For Samford so far this season, Layton Glisson leads the team with six goals to go along with three assists for 15 points. Whitaker Buchanan three goals and eight assists for 14 points. Sam De Luca, Fleming Dean and Ella Simpson have four goals each, while Brooklyn Miller has added three goals so far this season. In goal for Samford, Peyton Hull has played 1190:40, posting a 1.66 goals against average.

Samford has an all-time record of 24-9-5 in SoCon Tournament games. Samford has won the tournament in 2011, 2016, 2019, 2021 and 2022.
 
UNC Greensboro enters the game with a mark of 5-8-5 overall and 3-3-3 in Southern Conference play. The Spartans earned a 3-0 win over The Citadel in the first round of the SoCon Tournament Tuesday night.

Taylor Mentzer leads the Spartans with five goals, while Merle Greulich has four goals for UNCG. Emma Malone has been the main goalkeeper for UNCG, playing 1573:48 and posting a 1.09 goals against average.
 
The winner of the game between Samford and UNC Greensboro will advance to the SoCon Tournament semifinals to take on the Furman-ETSU winner Sunday at 1 p.m. at Shauna Yelton Field.
