Nicastro’s Impressive Freshman Season Continues At NCAA Regional Next Week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Samford freshman Gabi Nicastro has turned in an impressive season in her first year at Samford, and it is not over yet.
Next week, Nicastro will compete in the NCAA Auburn Regional, which will be played May 6-8, at the Auburn University Club.
Nicastro came to Samford from Huntsville High School in Huntsville, Ala. She was the No. 3-ranked women's amateur player in the state of Alabama, and she was 32nd nationally in the class of 2023, She also won the Alabama women's stroke play championship in 2023.
Nicastro talked about what attracted her to Samford when she was choosing where to go to college.
"When I first met Coach Joe (Davidson), I honestly thought he was a great guy," Nicastro said. "I went to visit Samford and I loved the campus, it was gorgeous. When I was researching everything about it, I couldn't find anything bad about the university. That ultimately helped me decide to come to Samford."
Nicastro made an immediate impact on the women's golf program this season. She led the team and ranked second in the conference with a 71.8 stroke average in 29 rounds. Nicastro took home individual medalist honors at both the Hoover Invitational in the fall and the ASU Spring Classic. She tallied 12 under-par rounds, including a low of 68, which she accomplished three times.
Nicastro led Samford to a second-place finish at the SoCon Championship, the best finish for the program since joining the league in 2008. After the SoCon Championship, she was named the SoCon's Freshman of the Year, and was selected for the All-SoCon and All-Freshman teams.
"Being named SoCon Freshman of the Year was pretty awesome," Nicastro said. "I didn't even realize that was a title I could have been named until a day or two before it happened. But, I was so happy to (win the award), it was pretty cool."
Nicastro earned an individual at-large selection for the NCAA Regional. She found out she had been selected on April 24 while watching the NCAA Women's Golf Championship selection show with her parents and head coach Joe Davidson in Davidson's office.
"Watching the selection show on TV with coach and my family was pretty cool because I didn't want to get my hopes up too much in case it didn't happen, I didn't want to be too disappointed," Nicastro said. "But I saw my name on there and my dad started freaking out and I was just like, I can't believe I actually made it. And to go to Auburn was pretty convenient, so I was pretty happy to see my name on TV."
Nicastro said she has been happy with the way her first collegiate season has done.
"I would say my first year in college was pretty darn good," Nicastro said. "I had a lot of fun with the team and coach. I think we did pretty well in our tournaments overall."
