BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Samford men's track & field freshman Zephaniah Carico-McLennan has qualified for the upcoming 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in the 800-meter race, USA Track & Field announced on Friday.
Carico-McLennan qualified with his school-record time of 1:46.75 at the NCAA East Regional Meet on May 24. The Olympic Trials will be held in Eugene, Ore., at historic Hayward Field. Preliminaries for the men's 800m are slated for Thursday, June 27 at 6:30 p.m. CT. Semifinals will take place on June 28 with the finals scheduled for June 30.
The Austin, Texas native swept the 800 meters at the Southern Conference Indoor and Outdoor championships this spring while finishing 15th in a hotly contested 800-meter race at the NCAA East Regional in May.
This marks the third straight Olympics that a member of the Samford track and field program has qualified for the trials. In 2016, Tray Oates reached the finals of the trials in the pole vault while
Justin Stuckey participated in the high jump event during the 2021 trials.
