SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Samford men's and women's track and field program had three athletes receive individual awards from the Southern Conference office when they released the announcement this afternoon.
Bradley Franklin,
Ayden Drake, and
Jaggerd Moore each were named SoCon Track Athletes of the Week as the Bulldogs captured three of the four weekly awards in the league.
Bradley Franklin has been dominant during his freshman season with the Bulldogs. He was won multiple 60-meter events in the sprint and hurdles as he was named the men's track athlete of the week for the second time this season. He had two wins on the week as he won the 60m finals at the Samford Bulldog Invite on Friday with a time of 6.82 seconds and then followed it up with a victory in the 60m hurdles with a time of 7.84 seconds at the Samford Bulldog Open the next day. Franklin has a personal-best time of 7.65 in the hurdles on the season.
Ayden Drake won the women's track athlete of the week after her performance in the women's 400-meter event at the Bulldog Invite on Friday. The senior from Atlanta, Ga. game in third place in the finals of the event but she set a personal record and the fourth-best time in school history in the women's indoor 400m with a time of 56.47 seconds. She was also the closing leg on the women's 4x400m team that dominated the field while setting a school record of 3:47.08 while running her split in 55.76 seconds.
The men's track athlete of the week honor went to
Jaggerd Moore after he set a personal record in the men's high jump on his way to a first-place finish. The junior from Trussville, Ala. easily out-jumped the field and set the 31st best mark in the nation this season with a height of 2.14 meters. The height cleared for Moore gives him the third-best mark in indoor Samford program history.
Bradley Franklin takes back to the track this weekend as he competes in the USA Indoor Championships and looks to qualify for nationals. The Bulldogs are back in action as a team the following week, Feb. 21-22 as they look to capture another SoCon Indoor Championship title.
