Samford Baseball Completes Sweep At Wofford With 6-2 Win Sunday

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Samford University baseball team completed its Southern Conference series sweep of Wofford with a 6-2 victory Sunday afternoon at King Field.
 
With the win, Samford improved its record to 17-15 overall and 4-2 in Southern Conference play. Wofford fell to 21-12 overall and 2-4 in league play.
 
Samford was led in the win by Gus Gandy, going 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and two RBI. Jackson Harris went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Parker McDonald homered, going 1-for-4 with an RBI. Jake Souders also drove in a run, going 1-for-4 at the plate.
 
Mason Blasche (4-0) earned the win on the mound for Samford, pitching 6.0 innings, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out five batters. Josh Leerssen pitched the final 3.0 innings, giving up just two hits to pick up his first save of the season.
 
For Wofford, David Wiley drove in one run in a 1-for-4 performance at the plate. Kenny Michaels (3-1) took the loss on the mound for the Terriers, tossing 3.1 innings, allowing four runs on five hits.
 
Samford jumped on top early with a run in the top of the first inning. Jeffrey Ince doubled to lead the game off. Harris then doubled to left-center field to drive in Ince for a 1-0 Bulldog lead.
 
In the fourth inning, Samford plated three runs to push its lead to 4-0. Souders scored the first run of the inning on a wild pitch. Gandy later doubled down the left field line to drive in Gatlin Pitts and Trey Higgins for a four-run Samford lead. In the fifth inning, Souders singled to drive in Harris to make the score 5-0.
 
Wofford plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to cut the lead to 5-2. Wiley singled to drive in Tyler Hare, and Ryan Wynn scored on a Samford error to bring Wofford to within three runs.
 
Samford added one final run in the eighth inning to make the final score 6-2. With one out in the inning, McDonald homered down the left-field line for the game's final run.
 
Next up, Samford will host West Georgia on Tuesday, April 8. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start from Joe Lee Griffin Field.
