BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford men's and women's track and field team is set to compete in the Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Monday and Tuesday. The Bulldogs will host the event for the second straight season as they will look to sweep the men's and women's championships for the fifth straight year.
The Bulldogs have competed in six outdoor events since they captured the championship with both teams at the SoCon Indoor Championship in late February. The Dogs have earned SoCon Athlete of the Week nine times during their outdoor campaign.
The events are scheduled to begin tomorrow at 9 a.m. with the men's decathlon and the women's heptathlon. Half of the field events will run on Monday from 10 to 2:30 p.m. while action on the track will begin at 11 a.m. Events are scheduled to resume at 9 a.m. on Tuesday with the winning team being crowned after the final event at 2:30 p.m.
The Bulldog men have totaled 251.5 points in the power rankings, scoring in 17 of 21 events, including 28 points in the decathlon, to easily outdistance second-place Western Carolina (144 points). Furman is third in the power rankings with 113 points. Samford's women hold a narrow lead in this season's power rankings, scoring in 17 of 21 events, for a total of 179 points. Western Carolina has totaled 153 points to rank second, after scoring in 15 of the events to be featured in the championship. Wofford is third with 133.
