SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Samford men's and women's track and field team had two members earn honors from the Southern Conference office this afternoon as
Erin Long and
Kyle Kaufelds earned the Women's and Men's Field Athlete of the Week awards after their performances at the Maroon and White Tune Up last weekend hosted by Mississippi State.
For the second straight week,
Erin Long earns the SoCon weekly Athlete of the Week award. The graduate student from Pelham, Ala. took first place in the women's javelin throw at the event last weekend in Starkville, Miss. She had a best throw of 49.46 meters as she won her second-straight event. Her mark from the Maroon and White Tune Up has her ranked 51st in the nation in the event.
Kyle Kaufelds earns his second Athlete of the Week award of the outdoor track season. The South Carolina native took second place in the men's javelin throw at the Mississippi State meet last weekend with a best throw of 65.78 meters. The sophomore is the highest-ranked SoCon men's javelin thrower in the nation with a season-best throw of 66.16m.
The Bulldogs are back in action on May 12 & 13 at the Southern Conference Outdoor Championship. Samford will host the two-day event as they look to continue their track conference dominance.
