Samford Baseball Opens Fall Practice

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University baseball team opened its fall practice Monday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field. The Bulldogs opened the session by going through some practice drills and then scrimmaged for a little over an hour.

"This was good, we were clean," Samford head coach Tony David said of the day. "We had to do some stuff on the front end, just to kind of get ready for the scrimmage. We played a short scrimmage, and it was clean, we really handled well defensively. And then the Red Team really came out swinging and hit two long home runs. And our pitching staff did a good job of just staying in the zone. We have some young guys, we have a lot of freshmen out here that can really play and I thought they handled themselves well in the first scrimmage, the game was not too much for them."

Samford returns a veteran team from last season. Six of the team's top seven hitters from last season are returning. David said he felt that that experience would help the squad as it goes through the fall and into the regular season.

"I feel great about our leadership and the type of guys that we've got in our program and them being the type of guys that we want," David said. "It's the first day of scrimmage, but as we go into this thing, that's one of our areas of strength. We've got a lot of returners that can play and that we think can be great leaders for us too."

The fall season will run through Nov. 9, and the Bulldogs will scrimmage every Monday, Wednesday and Friday of the season. The first fall game is scheduled for Nov. 2 against LSU in Biloxi.
