Football Holds Final Full Practice For App. State

Senior place-kicker Cameron Yaw.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The 25th-ranked Samford football team held its final full practice in preparation for Saturday's Homecoming game against 13th-ranked Appalachian State with a one-hour workout in shorts and helmets Thursday afternoon at Seibert Stadium.

Samford and Appalachian State are meeting for the seventh time, with Appalachian State holding a 5-1 advantage in the series. Last season, the two teams played in Boone, N.C., with ASU coming away with a 35-17 win.

Samford head coach Pat Sullivan said he knows his team will have its hands full on Saturday, but he has liked the way his team has prepared this week.

“I've been very pleased with our preparation this week,” Sullivan said. “I thought they had their mind on their business today and came out here and were mentally sharp.”

Entering this week, Samford leads the Southern Conference in interceptions with 11. The Bulldogs also rank second in the league in turnover margin. Sullivan said that is one of the things the Samford coaches try to emphasize every day.

“That's one of the things that every coach talks about,” Sullivan said. “If you can cause some turnovers and not turn it over and you're sound in your kicking game, you are going to have a chance to win at the end of the day.”

Samford will hold a walk-through Friday afternoon at Seibert Stadium. The walk-through is scheduled for 4:20 p.m. at Seibert Stadium.

The pre-game radio broadcast with Mike Grace, Jay Roberson and David McDaniel will begin one hour prior to kickoff. The pre-game show will include a Flashback segment featuring current Homewood Mayor and former Samford player Scott McBrayer.

The Bulldog Conversation at halftime, hosted by Samford University's Director of Media Relations Brad Radice, will feature James Huskey, a 1969 Samford graduate who is one of five individuals honored as Alumni of the Year. The pre-game show will also include pre and post-game interviews with Head Coach Pat Sullivan, and pre-game interviews with Assistant Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator Bill D'Ottavio and Co-Offensive Coordinator Travis Trickett.
