Football Has Good Day Of Preparation For The Citadel

Senior wide receiver Riley Hawkins.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford football team practiced for about two hours in full pads Tuesday afternoon at Seibert Stadium. The Bulldogs are preparing for Saturday's home game against 19th-ranked The Citadel.

The game will mark Samford's first home game in nearly a month. The Bulldogs played their last three games on the road at Gardner-Webb, Western Carolina and Georgia Southern. Samford enters this week's game with a  record of 4-1 overall and 2-1 in Southern Conference play. The Bulldogs are coming off a 35-16 setback at Georgia Southern last Saturday.

Samford head coach Pat Sullivan said he liked the way his team responded in Tuesday's practice. He also said playing an option team for the second-straight week helps in the Bulldogs' preparation for Saturday's game.

“I thought our attitude was good,” Sullivan said. “It was a better practice today than we had last Tuesday in that there was some carry over from working on the option last week. There are a few wrinkles that The Citadel does differently. We have some guys who are nicked up, but I thought they fought their way through it. Overall, it was a pretty good practice, but we have a long way to go to get ready for Saturday.”

The Citadel is currently 3-2 overall and 2-1 in SoCon play. The Citadel is also coming off its first SoCon loss, as the Bulldogs fell to Chattanooga last Saturday, 28-10. Sullivan said he has been impressed with what he has seen from The Citadel.

“They are an outstanding football team,” Sullivan said. “Their quarterback (Ben Dupree) is good. Their defense is so well coached, they make you go the long way for everything. This is going to be a challenge for us.”

Samford will practice again Wednesday afternoon. The practice is scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m. at Seibert Stadium.

Saturday's game against 19th-ranked The Citadel is scheduled for a 2 p.m. kickoff from Seibert Stadium. The game can be heard locally on ESPN 97.3 The Zone, or worldwide on the internet at the following link: Live Audio.
