Football Ready To Take On No. 19 The Citadel

Junior running back Fabian Truss.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford football team held its final full practice in preparation for Saturday's game against 19th-ranked The Citadel, with a one-hour workout in shorts and helmets Thursday afternoon at Seibert Stadium.

Samford and The Citadel are meeting for the sixth time, with The Citadel holding a 3-2 advantage in the series. The last two meetings in the series have come down to the last possession of the game. In 2010, The Citadel scored a touchdown late in the fourth quarter to win, 13-12 at Seibert Stadium, and last season, Samford scored a touchdown with six seconds left to win, 19-14, in Charleston.

Samford head coach Pat Sullivan said he expects another close, hard-fought contest this season.

“They're ranked 19th in the country and they're another good football team,” Sullivan said. “Every week, from here on out, it will be just like that for us. The last two years, against The Citadel, it has come down to the last play of the game, and I don't expect anything any different this week.”

This week's game marks the second-straight week Samford has played a team that runs the option offense, after playing at Georgia Southern last week. Sullivan said there are some similarities in the way the two teams play, but there are some things that The Citadel does differently.

“There will be some carry over,” Sullivan said. “But they do some different things, and we have our work cut out for us. In fact, The Citadel has already beaten Georgia Southern and App. State this year, so they're a good football team.”

The Bulldogs will hold one final walk-through Friday afternoon at Seibert Stadium.

Saturday's game against 19th-ranked The Citadel is scheduled for a 2 p.m. kickoff from Seibert Stadium. The game can be heard locally on ESPN 97.3 The Zone, or worldwide on the internet at www.973thezone.com. Fans who attend the game but would also like to listen to the radio broadcast can hear it, with no delay, in the stadium by tuning their radios to 106.3 FM.

The pre-game radio broadcast with Mike Grace, Jay Roberson and David McDaniel will begin one hour prior to kickoff. The pre-game show will include a Flashback segment featuring Lee Frazier, who was a member of the 1991 Samford team that reached the semifinals of the Division I-FCS Playoffs. Frazier, who was a member of the Samford radio broadcast team from 2003 to 2006, is currently the City Clerk for the city of Birmingham.

The Bulldog Conversation at halftime, hosted by Samford University's Director of Media Relations Brad Radice, will feature Nena Sander, the Dean of the Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing. The pre-game show will also include pre and post-game interviews with Head Coach Pat Sullivan, and pre-game interviews with Assistant Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator Bill D'Ottavio and Co-Offensive Coordinator Travis Trickett.

Saturday's game is Youth Day at Seibert Stadium. Any youth football player or cheerleader who attends the game in their uniform will receive free admission to the game. Teams from the A.G. Gaston Boys and Girls Club will scrimmage on the Seibert Stadium field at halftime of Saturday's game.
