Andy Summerlin and defensive lineman
Nicholas Williams were honored Sunday morning for their performances in Saturday's 24-17 double overtime win over sixth-ranked Wofford.
SouthernPigkin.com named Summerlin its Steak 'n Shake Southern Conference X-Factor of the Week, while College Sports Madness named Williams its SoCon Defensive Player of the Week.
With Samford trailing Wofford, 17-9, Summerlin led the Bulldogs on a 10-play, 72-yard drive over the final 1:45 of the fourth quarter, hitting
Trett Hardman for a one-yard touchdown as time expired. Summerlin then connected with
Chris Cephus for the two-point conversion to tie the game at 17-17 and force overtime.
In the second overtime period, Summerlin hit
Kelsey Pope on a 12-yard touchdown pass for the eventual game-winning score. For the game, Summerlin completed 29-of-35 passes for 165 yards and two touchdowns.
Williams was a force for the Bulldogs' defense in the win. He finished with two sacks and two and a half tackles for a loss of 14 yards. He also contributed one pass break-up in the win.
Overall, Williams finished the game with six tackles, including three solo stops against the Terriers. For the season, Williams leads the team with seven sacks and eight tackles for a loss.
The official Southern Conference weekly awards will be announced on Monday.
The Bulldogs will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 10, when they play at Elon. The game is scheduled for a 12:30 p.m. (CT) start from Elon, N.C.
