Samford Places 36 On Academic All-Conference Team

Samford student-athletes posted an average GPA of 3.57

SPARTANBURG, S.C.— Samford University placed 36 student-athletes on the Southern Conference's 2012 Spring Academic All-Conference team, released by the league on Thursday.
 
The women's outdoor track and field team had the most representatives among Samford teams with 11. The men's outdoor track and field team had seven representatives, followed by women's tennis with five, and baseball, men's tennis and women's golf with three each. The softball and men's golf teams had two representatives each. Samford's 36 student-athletes had an average grade-point average of 3.57 on a 4.0 scale.
 
In the conference as a whole, 311 student-athletes were honored, with at least 15 representatives from each of the 12 SoCon institutions. These student-athletes participated in baseball, softball, men's and women's golf, men's and women's outdoor track and field and men's and women's tennis. The group recorded a combined 3.60 grade point average.
 
The women's outdoor track and field programs supplied the greatest number of honorees with 77, followed by men's outdoor track and field with 53 and baseball with 50.
 
Samford was one of just three institutions to place at least 30 members on the Academic All-Conference team. Furman led the league with 39, and Wofford placed third with 30 representatives.
 
To be eligible, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.3 cumulative grade point average entering the spring season and were required to compete in at least one-half of their team's competitions during the recently-concluded spring campaign. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least 24 credit hours in the previous two semesters.
