Sullivan Pleased With Final Full Scrimmage

The Bulldogs ran over 100 plays during Saturday's scrimmage

Durell Hill led the defense with seven tackles in Saturday's scrimmage.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford football team held its final full scrimmage of preseason practice Saturday morning at Seibert Stadium.

The Bulldogs ran over 100 plays in the scrimmage. Samford head coach Pat Sullivan said, overall, he liked what he saw from his team during the workout.

“I was pleased with the way we played,” Sullivan said. “We ran a little over 100 plays, and I thought there were some good plays offensively and there were some good plays defensively. We were able to get a lot of special teams work in too.”

Four quarterbacks saw playing time during the scrimmage. The competition for the starting quarterback job is still going on between senior Andy Summerlin and junior Ben Neill, and both players turned in strong performances on Saturday.

Summerlin completed 12-of-22 passes for 160 yards, one touchdown and one interception, while Neill was good on 10-of-18 passes for 100 yards. Redshirt freshman Carson Barnett completed 2-of-5 passes for 10 yards. Trett Hardman, who has moved from quarterback to tight end this season, played quarterback during the final drive of the scrimmage. He completed all five of his attempts for 41 yards.

Sophomore Stanley Robinson led the running game, with nine carries for 71 yards. Freshman Jake Wilks carried the ball nine times for 39 yards, while Jeremiaha Gates had nine carries for 21 yards and a touchdown.

Freshman Gavin Sinclair caught four passes for 36 yards to lead all receivers. Junior Kelsey Pope had three catches for 38 yards, while Jauan Davis had three catches for 28 yards and a touchdown. Freshman Tony Philpot caught three passes for 18 yards, while junior Fabian Truss caught three passes for 23 yards. Junior Chris Cephus had two catches for 36 yards.

Defensively, Durell Hill had seven tackles, including one tackle for a loss. Trey Wesley and Darion Sutton also had seven tackles each. Cody Brooks and Josh Killett produced six tackles each. James Bradberry had five tackles and an interception during the scrimmage. Keith Shoulders turned in five tackles as well.

“I felt like today we had a lot of guys giving good effort,” Shoulders said. “Obviously, our execution and game operation has to improve, but next week we will work to sharpen it up a little.”

On special teams, Cameron Yaw made his lone field goal attempt, from 46-yards out. He was also good on his lone extra-point attempt. Greg Peranich made a field goal from 36-yards out, and one extra point. Warren Handrahan made a 22-yard field goal, and he missed one from 40-yards out.

Sullivan added that, while the team has a lot of work to do over the next two weeks leading up to its season-opening game, he likes the work his team has put in so far during fall camp.

“We have a lot of things to correct between now and two weeks from today, but I am pleased with this football team,” Sullivan said. “I've said all fall that I like the way they work and I like their character.”

The Bulldogs will practice again on Sunday, with the practice scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m. at Seibert Stadium.

Samford will kick off the 2012 season at home against SoCon-rival Furman on Sept. 1. The game is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start, and fans can keep up with the game via live stats at www.samfordsports.com.
