BOONE, N.C. -- The Samford University soccer team will face its third-consecutive Southern Conference road challenge Sunday at 1 p.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs square off against the Appalachian State Mountaineers in a pivotal league matchup to be held at the ASU Soccer Stadium (1,000).

Samford (9-3-1, 3-1-1 SoCon) heads into the contest riding the positive momentum of a 2-1 overtime victory at Western Carolina on Friday. In the hard-fought SoCon showdown held at the Catamount Athletic Complex, Samford tallied the triumph as the Catamounts' Tara Budnick accidentally kicked the Bulldogs' game-winning goal into her own net in the sixth minute of overtime.

The goal was originally awarded to Samford's Amanda Abbott, who was battling with Budnick for the ball near Western Carolina's back line. During the melee, Budnick twisted, whirled and connected with the ball sending it over the head of goalkeeper Carly Tintsman and into the back of the net for the game-winning goal.

With the win, Samford moved to 4-1-1 all-time against Western Carolina and improved to 3-3 in road matches this season.

Sunday's contest marks the Bulldogs' third straight road challenge. On Oct. 6, Samford dropped a heartbreaking 2-1 decision at Furman before winning at Western Carolina on Friday. Last week's loss proved to be the Bulldogs' first conference road defeat in over three years. The setback was Samford's first away from home in league play since a 1-0 loss at UNCG on Sept. 26, 2010.

During the Bulldogs' impressive three-year undefeated road streak, Samford compiled a stellar 15-0-2 record while playing at SoCon opponents.

Appalachian State (6-4-2, 3-0-2 SoCon) enters Sunday's matchup in the midst of a five-match undefeated streak. Since losing to Morehead State on Sept. 22, the Mountaineers have opened conference play with back-to-back ties against UNCG, 1-1, and Elon, 3-3, before rattling off a trio of consecutive wins over Georgia Southern, 3-1, Davidson, 2-1, and Chattanooga, 5-0.

In Friday's throttling of Chattanooga, Appalachian State finished with five different players scoring goals, two of which occurred in the first half. The Mountaineers outshot the Mocs, 18-8.

Samford owns a 4-0-1 all-time record against Appalachian State.

Following Sunday's SoCon showdown at Appalachian State, the Samford University soccer team will next be in action Friday at 7 p.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs return home to Birmingham, Ala., for a Senior Night matchup against The Citadel to be held at the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium.
