Bulldogs Head To T-Town For 2013 USTA-ITA Regionals

Samford will compete in the prestigious fall event Thursday through Monday
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- The Samford University men's tennis team is eager to compete in its biggest tournament of the 2013 fall season this week as the Bulldogs head to the USTA-ITA Southern Regional Championships to be held Thursday through Monday at the University of Alabama Tennis Complex.
The talent-laden field of the four-day competition will consist of 81 players from 13 teams. The schools competing in the 2013 USTA-ITA Southern Regional Championships are Samford, Alabama, Auburn, Louisiana-Lafayette, LSU, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, New Orleans (UNO), Nicholls State, South Alabama, Troy, Tulane and UAB.
The tournament is slated to begin at 8:30 a.m. (CDT) each day (Thursday-Monday) and will be held at the University of Alabama Tennis Complex.
Competing for Samford this weekend will be Austin Akers, Elliot Barnwell, Trey Carter, Fares Kilani, Henry Moore and Liam Sullivan. All six players will be competing in both the singles and doubles tournaments.
In their most recent outing, the Bulldogs turned in a brilliant weekend of play at the 31st Annual UTC Steve Baras Fall Classic on Sept. 29, as they collected championship titles in both singles and doubles play at the talent-laden three-day tournament held at the Champions Club.
Samford's Sullivan earned the championship title of the Flight 4 singles bracket, while the Bulldogs' doubles tandem comprised of sophomore Kilani and Akers took the tournament title in the Flight 2 doubles competition.
In the Flight 4 singles bracket, Samford's Sullivan squared off against his Bulldog teammate Carter for the championship title and earned a 6-2, 6-2, victory in the matchup. Sullivan, Samford's highly-touted true freshman from Richmond, Va., concluded the 31st Annual UTC Steve Baras Fall Classic with a brilliant 4-0 record.
Carter, the Bulldogs' talented sophomore transfer from NC State, finished the weekend with a near-perfect 3-1 mark.
In doubles play, the Bulldogs' Kilani and Akers earned the championship title of the Flight 2 bracket by defeating East Tennessee State's combination of Joao Silva and Conner Huertas, 9-8.
Action in the 2013 USTA-ITA Southern Regional Championships will begin at 8:30 a.m. (CDT) on Friday and will last throughout the day.
