Summerlin Named To CFPA Preseason Watch List

Samford senior quarterback Andy Summerlin was named to the College Football Performance Awards' preseason watch list for its Quarterback Award.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Samford senior quarterback Andy Summerlin has been named to the College Football Performance Awards' (CFPA) preseason watch list for its Quarterback Award, the organization announced on Monday.

The Quarterback Award goes to the top quarterback in all of Division I-FCS football. Summerlin was one of five Southern Conference quarterbacks named to the list, and he was the only quarterback from a school in the state of Alabama to make the list.

In 2012, Summerlin completed 244-of-365 passes for 2,269 yards and 10 touchdowns. Summerlin averaged 206.3 passing yards per game, and he had a long pass of 82 yards last season. He completed 66.8 percent of his passes in 2012.

Summerlin passed for over 200 yards five times last season. His best performance, statistically, came in a 38-7 win over 19th-ranked The Citadel, completing 23-of-32 passes for 320 yards and a touchdown.

Summerlin helped lead Samford to a 7-4 overall record in 2012, the program's best mark since 2003. The Bulldogs went 5-3 in SoCon play, the team's best league record since joining the SoCon in 2008.

For 2013, Summerlin leads a group of eight returning starters on offense for the Bulldogs. The team opens the 2013 season on Friday, Aug. 30, when the Bulldogs travel to Atlanta to take on Georgia State in the Georgia Dome.
