SPARTANBURG, S.C.—Samford sophomore safety
Josh Kimberlin was named the Southern Conference's Defensive Player of the Week when the league released its weekly football awards on Monday.
Kimberlin tied a school record with three interceptions in Samford's 27-20 win at Florida A&M Saturday afternoon. He returned the three interceptions for a total of 67 yards.
Kimberlin's first pick came late in the third quarter with the Bulldogs holding a 24-20 lead. In the fourth quarter with Samford leading, 27-20, Kimberlin intercepted FAMU's Damien Flemming on back-to-back possessions in Samford territory to seal the victory. The Olive Branch, Miss., native added three tackles in the win.
This marks the third-straight week a Samford player has been named SoCon Defensive Player of the Week. Junior safety
Jaquiski Tartt earned the honor on Sept. 2, and senior linebacker
Justin Shade was named Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 9.
Kimberlin and the Bulldogs will play their first home game of the 2013 season this Saturday, Sept. 21, against Southeastern Louisiana. Kickoff for the game is set for 2 p.m. from Seibert Stadium.
